Why Your Colleagues Hear Your Keyboard Louder Than You Do

Your typing sounds like gentle tapping to you and like a hailstorm to everyone else on the call. That gap is real, and it has a simple cause: your ears and your microphone are in very different places, listening in very different ways. Once you understand the three or four things that exaggerate keystrokes on a call, quieting them takes a few minutes and rarely requires buying anything.

Your microphone is closer to the keys than your ears are

On a laptop, the built-in microphone usually sits a few centimeters from the keyboard, often in the same slab of metal or plastic. Your ears are roughly an arm’s length away and pointed forward, not down. Sound falls off quickly with distance, so the microphone receives each keystroke at a much higher level relative to your voice than you ever perceive.

There is also a second path you cannot hear. Every key press sends a small shock through the chassis of the laptop, and the microphone is bolted to that chassis. The vibration travels through the body of the machine straight into the mic capsule. To you, a key press is a faint click in the air. To the microphone, it is a knock on the wall of the room it lives in.

The software is turning you up between sentences

Most meeting apps and many operating systems apply automatic gain control. Its job is to keep your voice at a steady level, so it raises the microphone sensitivity when the input is quiet and lowers it when the input is loud.

Think about when you type on a call. It is nearly always while someone else is talking and you are silent, taking notes or looking something up. From the software’s point of view, the input has gone quiet, so it raises the gain. Then the keystrokes arrive into a microphone that is now more sensitive than it was when you were speaking. The clatter is not just picked up; it is amplified.

Keystrokes are also an awkward kind of sound for noise suppression. Filters in Zoom, Teams and Google Meet handle steady noise such as fans and air conditioning very well, because that noise is constant and predictable. A keystroke is short, sharp and irregular, with energy in the same frequency range as consonants like t, k and p. Lighter settings often let the sharp front edge of each click through.

What your listeners are hearing it through

Your colleagues are probably wearing headphones or earbuds, which deliver every detail directly into their ears with no room noise to mask it. Meanwhile you hear your own keyboard in an open room, blended with the hum of your computer and whatever else is going on around you.

Some platforms also treat your typing as speech. If the clicks are loud enough, the app may flag you as the active speaker, highlight your tile, or briefly duck the person who is actually talking. That is often the point at which someone asks who is typing.

Fixes, in order of effort

Muting while you type is the zero-cost answer and it works every time. Most apps offer a push-to-talk style shortcut for speaking briefly while staying muted.

Next, raise the noise suppression level in your meeting app. Zoom, Teams and Meet all include a built-in setting for it, and the higher levels are noticeably better at catching clicks. Moving the microphone helps more than any filter. A headset with a boom mic puts the capsule next to your mouth and far from the keys, which flips the ratio of voice to clatter in your favor. If you use a desk mic, put it on a boom arm or a shock mount, or at least on a folded cloth, so the desk stops passing thumps into it.

Finally, consider the keyboard itself. Mechanical switches with a loud click are the worst offenders. Quieter switch types, rubber o-rings, a desk mat under the keyboard, or simply a lighter touch all reduce the sound at its source.

A thirty-second test before you trust it

Do not guess whether the changes worked. Start a meeting on your own, record a short clip while you type and talk, and play it back through headphones.
